Are your parquet floors warping, stained, discoloured, turning black, developing dark joints, becoming loose or peeling? These can all be signs of water damaged parquet.
But not all water damage is the same. A small amount of rainwater or a wet mop is very different from flooding or a leak that has gone unnoticed for weeks.
The extent of the damage determines whether the parquet can be restored through sanding and refinishing, or whether damaged sections need to be removed and repaired.
What are the types of water damaged parquet?
Water damage to parquet can range from surface-level deterioration to more severe damage affecting the timber and subfloor.
1. Surface-Level Water Damage
Less severe damage can occur when the floor is exposed to moisture for a shorter period, such as:
- Wet mopping
- Rainwater entering through an open window
- Small leaks that are resolved quickly
- Spills or pets urine that are cleaned up promptly
You may notice:
- Whitish or cloudy stains
- Peeling varnish
- Surface level discoloration
- Slight warping
If the timber is still structurally sound, the damage may be treatable through sanding and refinishing. However, if individual parquet blocks have swollen, warped or deteriorated beyond repair, those sections may still need to be replaced.
2. Structural Water Damage
More serious damage is usually associated with flooding or prolonged water leaks, such as leaks from windows, bathrooms or plumbing.
Signs may include:
- Rotting or deteriorating timber
- Severe warping or swelling
- Loose parquet blocks
- Hollow-sounding areas
- Timber that has lifted or buckled
- Dark or blackened timber
When moisture has reached the subfloor or remained trapped underneath the parquet, simply sanding and varnishing the surface will not solve the underlying problem. The affected sections may need to be removed, allowed to dry properly and replaced before the floor can be refinished.
How is water damaged parquet repaired?
1. Assessing the damage
We inspect the affected area to determine the condition of the parquet and how far the water damage has travelled. This includes checking for loose, hollow, swollen or deteriorated parquet.
2. Removing damaged parquet
Parquet and timber planks that are structurally damaged will are fully removed. In many cases, only the affected sections need to be taken out rather than replacing the entire floor.
3. Allowing the sub-floor to dry
The affected area needs sufficient time to dry before new parquet is installed. For serious water damage, this can take around 3–5 days or longer, depending on the extent of the moisture and site conditions.
4. Installing new parquet
Once the affected area is sufficiently dry, replacement parquet or timber blocks can be installed. As parquet is a natural material, new and existing timber may have slight differences in colour, grain, and appearance. This is normal and becomes less noticeable after the floor is sanded and refinished.
5. Level sanding the repaired area
The newly installed parquet is sanded down to the level of the existing floor so that the repaired section sits evenly with the surrounding flooring.
6. Sanding and refinishing the entire floor
After the repairs, the entire floor is typically sanded and refinished.
This helps the repaired sections blend more naturally with the existing flooring and gives the floor a more uniform, level finish.
Most repair works take around 1–3 working days, excluding the drying period where required. The actual timeframe depends on the size and extent of the repair.
