Hi Homeowners! Just had your marble floors polished? Or wondering how to keep your existing marble looking clean and shiny for longer?
Marble is a beautiful natural stone, but it needs a little more care than ceramic or porcelain tiles. Knowing how to clean marble properly can help prevent quicker dulling, etching and stains, especially in high-moisture areas like bathrooms.
The good news is that marble doesn’t require complicated cleaning. Gentle, regular maintenance with the right products is usually all you need.
What to expect after marble polishing
1. Your marble is ready for use immediately
At Mr Wood Varnish™, our marble polishing process includes two rounds of machine deep cleaning to remove all polishing residue and chemicals from the surface. Once the process is completed, your marble floor is ready for usage immediately, with no downtime required.

2. No need to mop immediately
There’s no need to immediately mop or deep-clean your newly polished marble. In fact, it’s better to avoid unnecessary moisture and cleaning immediately after polishing.
3. Continue with gentle maintenance
Once you’re back to your normal cleaning routine, use a pH-neutral cleaner formulated for natural stone and avoid acidic products such as vinegar and lemon-based cleaners.
Tips on how to clean marble
If you’re wondering how to clean marble safely, keep it simple.
For everyday cleaning, use:
- A soft microfiber cloth or mop
- A small amount of water
- A pH-neutral cleaner formulated for natural stone (Budget option / Baby-safe option)
For regular floor cleaning, mop as needed but avoid excessive water or leaving standing water on the marble. For spills, wipe them up promptly rather than allowing liquids to sit on the surface.
For bathroom marble tiles,
- Wipe away soap and shampoo residue regularly
- Remove excess water after showering where practical
- Keep the bathroom well ventilated
- Clean water marks before they become heavy mineral buildup
Avoid Vinegar and Acidic Cleaners on Marble
One of the most common mistakes when learning how to clean marble is reaching for vinegar, lemon juice or other acidic cleaners. This can cause etching, leaving the marble looking dull, cloudy, or rough in affected areas.
Important: A cleaning solution that is safe for ceramic or porcelain tiles may not be safe for marble. Always check that a product is suitable for natural stone before using it.
What If the Marble Still Looks Dirty After Cleaning?
Sometimes, cleaning simply isn’t enough. If your marble still has stubborn stains, etching, dull patches or has lost its original shine despite regular cleaning, the problem may be with the marble surface itself rather than dirt sitting on top of it.
In these cases, professional marble grinding and polishing may be required to restore the surface.
Likewise, if your bathroom has black, deteriorated or missing grout, cleaning won’t replace the damaged grout. Professional marble gum re-grouting may be required before polishing the marble.
