There is no one-size-fits-all price for wooden balcony deck varnishing. The price varies depending on the extent of restoration work required, labour hours, and materials. Though, you can refer to this general price guideline.
Here are the main factors contractors look at:
1. Condition of the Timber
This is one of the biggest factors affecting balcony deck varnishing price.
If the timber is simply faded but otherwise in good condition, it may only need light surface sanding and 1–2 coats of varnish. If the existing coating is peeling or the timber is rough and heavily weathered, more extensive preparation will be required. This may include a deeper sand down and additional coats to properly restore and protect the surface.
The worser the existing surface, the more preparation it needs.
2. Size of Decking
Naturally, a larger balcony requires more materials and labour than a small planter-sized balcony. Stairs, small platforms, corners and uneven or difficult-to-reach areas can take more time to prepare and finish properly.
3. Type of Finish and Varnish used
Outdoor timber needs a coating that is designed to withstand outdoor exposure.
For balcony decking, we recommend an exterior UV-resistant and water-resistant wood coating rather than an indoor wood varnish. Indoor products are not designed for Singapore’s weather and can deteriorate much faster when exposed to sun and rain.

Does balcony deck varnishing require sanding?
Yes, the surface always have to be prepared before application of the varnish. Good surface preparation is what allows the new finish to adhere properly and perform as it should.
The extent of sanding depends on the condition of the existing decking. A deck that is still in relatively good condition may only require light buffing, while heavily weathered or peeling decking may require a full sand down.
A proper refinishing process may involve:
